What is your favourite poem? Mine is 'The Magic Box' by Kit Wright. You can read it below...

I love it because Kit Wright has described some truly wonderful things. Some of them only exist in the imagination and could never really be put in a box. He has used wonderful vocabulary to describe these images and you can really imagine what they would look, sound or feel like. I also love the way the poem sounds when you read it aloud. Especially the first line, 'the swish of a silk sari on a summer night.' The alliteration (repetition of the 's' sound) really helps it to slip off the tongue.


You may choose one of the following tasks:

1) Can you continue the poem? What would you put into the magic box? Write three verses that describe what you would put into the box.


2) What is your favourite poem? Choose your favourite poem and write it up neatly on paper. You may decorate it if you like. Can you also explain why you like it? Which are your favourite words, images or sentences?

Have a look at this boring list poem.

In the blue dream jar you might find:

a parrot,

a butterfly,
the sea,
the sky,
a precious stone,
a gift.




How can you improve it? Maybe you could add some exciting adjectives (gargantuan, ferocious) or some powerful verbs (pounced, erupted). You could include some alliteration (the menacing monster was munching his meaty meal) or a simile (its skin was a cold as ice, it crawled like a snail).

Write your own, improved version of the poem. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

For homework this week, I would like you to post six super sentences containing suspense. 
When writing your sentences, remember to include the following techniques used in class:
  • Short sentences to build up tension
  • Ellipsis (…) to create the ‘what happens next?’ moment
  • SHOW how the character felt (His heart pounded, sweat poured from his face.)
  • Similes
  • Dramatic sentence starters  (At that moment.....)
  • Use the senses to describe, particularly SOUNDS!
You may use the following short openers as a starting point:
  1. Dougal spotted
  2. Dougal was sleeping
  3. In the distance…
  4. Dougal turned around…
  5. Dougal opened the door
  6. Cautiously, Dougal crept inside
Alternatively, you may wish to create suspense sentences about a completely different adventure!  I'm already looking forward to reading your work.

Have a look at the setting above and imagine you are there. Write the introduction to a mystery story, using between 50 and 100 words. Think about describing the SENSES in your opening. What could you see, hear, smell? What did you touch and how did you feel?

Next week we will be writing a letter to Downing Street to ask if we are allowed to go and visit! Therefore your task this week is to do some research into Downing Street and come up with five pieces of information or questions that you might want to include in your letter. Please do not write the letter. We will be doing this in class.

Example questions are shown below:

1. Who built 10 Downing Street?

2. Who lives at 10 Downing Street?

3. Where is 10 Downing Street?

We will be using this information in lessons so you may find it easier to do this work on paper. 
Therefore although due on Friday - the sooner you can do it the better!
This means you can have it with you at your desk while you are writing.
 Please ask for paper if you need it.

This week we have been learning about explanation texts. Your homework this week is to write a 2-3 paragraph letter to your teacher explaining why you have NOT done your homework.

What can you find out about the Romans?



Next week, in Literacy and History, we will be learning about the Romans. Your homework this week is to research the Romans in order to answer the following questions:

1) What were Roman roads like? Why did they build them? Can you find any examples of Roman roads that still exist today?


2) How did the Romans stay healthy? What can you find out about Roman gymnasiums and baths? What is an aqueduct and how was it useful?


3) How did the Romans organise their army?


4) What were Roman forts used for? Can you find any examples of Roman forts that still exist today? What and where is Hadrian's Wall?

Discussion Texts

We have been learning all about discussion texts and balanced arguments. For your homework this week, I'd like you to write a discussion of the following question: Do dogs make better pets than cats?

Remember to:

-Write an introduction that explains what you are discussing.
-Write arguments FOR and AGAINST, backed up with good reasons.
-Include a conclusion that sums up and explains your decision.
-Include conjunctions to add information to your argument (Furthermore, In addition, Indeed, Moreover).
-Include conjunctions to introduce a different side of the argument (However, On the other hand, In contrast).
-Include generalisers (some people, many pet owners).
-Include interesting words to introduce opinions (think, claim, suggest, believe).

SCIENCE COMPETITION

The first week back after half term is Science Week! As usual, there will be a science investigation competition. Your homework is to plan, carry out and write up your investigation. The competition will be held on Friday,16th June, so you have plenty of time. Please could you investigate a scientific problem or a science question that interests you. Ideally, you will carry out an experiment, survey or test, rather than researching the answer to a question in books or on the internet. You can present your work on up to A1 (84cm x 59cm) paper and can bring in objects or photographs to show the results of their experiments. The work will be displayed in classrooms on Friday 16th June, with classes opening at 3.15pm for parents and carers to come and see your work. 

Don't forget our 'scientist for a day' dress up on Wednesday, 7th June. You can come to school dressed as a famous scientist. Be prepared to tell the class who you are and what your biggest achievements were.
